File Manager
Browse, upload, edit and download files of stacks and volumes in the browser.
The File Manager opens on a stack's Files tab (the stack's folder) and on a volume's Files tab (the data inside the volume). You never need to copy files to a server by hand.
Browse and organize
- The buttons at the left of the toolbar are Upload Files, Upload Folder, New File and New Folder; point at one to see its name. On a phone they are in the Add menu. You can also drag files onto the page.
- On a touch screen, tap the box at the left of a row to select it, or press and hold a row to open its menu. On a phone, each row shows its size and when it changed under its name, and its menu starts with the exact time it changed.
- An item's menu has Download (Download as ZIP for a folder), Copy, Cut, Paste Into Folder, Rename, Change Permissions and Delete.
- Create Archive packs files into a
.zipor.tar.gz. Extract unpacks a.zip,.tar.gzor.tgz. For a lot of data, upload one archive and extract it on the server. - Uploads and file jobs show their progress under the file list; creating and extracting archives also shows about how long is left. Uploads stop if you reload or close the tab; copying, extracting and the other file jobs keep running on the server.
Deleting a file or folder can't be undone.
Edit a file
Click a file to open it in the editor. It highlights the syntax, has Search and Replace, and can Format YAML and JSON. Press Save or Ctrl S.
- The language select starts at Auto Detect; pick a language there to override it. On a phone, Language, Wrap Long Lines and Format are in More Editor Options (⋮). While you type on a phone, the editor moves up so the text gets the room above the keyboard and the line you tapped stays in view; scroll up past the first line to see the header again.
- A Markdown file opens in Preview, which shows it the way GitHub does,
with tables, task lists and alerts such as
> [!NOTE]. Images show as links. Press Edit to change the text; the browser remembers your last choice for the next Markdown file. - If the file changed on the server while you edited it, you can Compare, Reload From Disk, Save As another file or Overwrite.
- In a stack, saving
compose.yamlor.envdoes not deploy (see Stacks). - Images are previewed; other binary files can be downloaded.
Limits
| Limit | Default |
|---|---|
| Largest file you can edit (larger files open read-only) | 4.19 MB |
| Largest upload, per file | 53.69 GB |
| Largest download, or archive you create | 53.69 GB |
Your reverse proxy must allow uploads this large too. To change the limits, see Configuration.
Good to know:
- In a stack, its Compose and env files (wherever they are, including
includeandextendsfiles) and folders that hold one need the “View Compose Definition” permission to open, download or copy, and “Edit Compose Definition” to change, move, delete or extract into. - In a stack's folder, symbolic links are listed but never followed: open the file or folder they point to instead.
- Docker Manager's own volumes, and volumes that don't keep their data in Docker's own volume folder (another driver, NFS and CIFS, memory, a server folder or a device), have no Files tab.
- If you paste a folder where a folder of the same name already exists, Replace replaces that folder, even when it holds the folder you paste.
- Upload Folder shows only in browsers that can pick a folder. On older phones, upload the files or one archive instead.
